About Abode Tours

Abode Tours is run by myself, Sid, and involves the active participation of people from the communities we travel in and numerous friends.

Abode gets its name from the humble home where I stayed during my first visit to the region of knuckles. When I first got to the village of Walpolamula in 2004, the little house of M.G. Wjerathna to me only existed in fairy tales. Over looking the great valley, surrounded by a ridge, it was an ideal natural fortress to live and die in - a preserved culture. Over the years our bonds strengthened and abode pampered many travellers, both local and foreign, to experience an indigenous lifestyle. We were so happy to have them. Abode evolved into a small community enterprise which later played a great part in settling its inhabitants elsewhere after a string of wild elephant attacks affected the village.

The House

We are a very small operation and our visitors do not exceed more than double digit mark per year, ensuring that the experience is not diluted and reserved for the lucky few.

In keeping with our simplicities and drawing bridges with other communities we now operate in Mannar working with a similar group of people in a totally different environment. This region of the country has only recently become accessible again following the end of the conflict and provides a fascinating insight into a way of life that few get to see.

By integrating we hope to deliver a travel experience that is unique, culturally and environmentally dynamic and economically viable in the interest of everybody.

Abode tours, in the Knuckles, Mannar or elsewhere, are characterised by wild settings, unplanned encounters and a spirit of discovery.
